On the Mergellina seafront in Naples, during a warm summer sunset, a young boy spends the afternoon diving into the sea, playing, and laughing with his friend Yakoub, a Tunisian boy. Not far away, an elderly man rests on the shore until their voices and splashing water awaken him, initially leaving him annoyed. When Yakoub’s mother calls him home and the two friends are forced to part ways, one final embrace and a necklace given as a token of affection turn the moment into an unforgettable memory. The elderly man’s eyes then fill with emotion, revealing the bond between past and present: he is, in fact, the little boy now grown old, reliving the last afternoon he spent with his childhood friend. Sahbi is a tender and universal story about memory, childhood, and the bonds that continue to endure beyond time and distance, beneath the flight of the swallows.
